New HGV mirror directive imminent

With new EU legislation coming into effect in March regarding retro-fitting of enhanced specification mirrors to HGVs, TransLinc has been taking steps to ensure that customers' vehicles are compliant.

The new visibility guidelines, introduced to enhance the driver's near side field of view and protect vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists and motor cyclists are particularly relevant for a large proportion of the vehicles supplied by TransLinc that operate in urban areas. The vehicles affected include refuse collection vehicles, gritters, large road sweepers and tippers which will all be retro-fitted with Class IV (wide angle) and Class V (close proximity) mirrors that the EU predict could save up to 400 lives each year.

Dave Parsons, National Operations Manager for TransLinc said, "It is TransLinc's responsibility to ensure all vehicles we supply on contract hire are fitted with the new mirrors. Some of our customers will choose to do this independently and we have implemented a fitment programme to update all vehicles to meet the necessary legislations".

"As the majority of vehicles supplied by TransLinc operate in urban areas, we strongly support any measures to improve pedestrian and road safety within the 45 local authorities in which we operate".
