SEPA Update
Weekly news from the
Scottish Environment Protection Agency
World Environment Day

The United Nations World Environment Day is on Monday 5 June and SEPA has linked up with the Environment Agency to urge people to make a pledge to 'promise the earth.'

There are ten promises ranging from turning off the tap when you brush your teeth to using a bag for life on. Or you could go further and promise to organise a green project in your community, or to offset your carbon emissions when you take a flight.

Last year across the UK, over 25,000 people made nearly 140,000 pledges and more than 200 organisations took part.

The pledges resulted in: 181 swimming pools of water being saved;191 dustbin lorries of waste being saved ;3,379,168 plastics bags being saved, which if laid end to end would stretch 1,791 kilometres (1000 miles).

SEPA releases Dalgety Bay hazard assessment

Action to alert members of the public to continuing radioactive contamination at Dalgety Bay is supported by the conclusions of a risk assessment.

The report, which was published recently by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), draws together information on the possible origin and current risks posed to beach users.

SEPA made an early draft of this assessment available to members of the Dalgety Bay Forum last month.

A copy of the report is available at :

SEPA Releases Latest Recycling Figures

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has today (Friday 5th May) announced the latest quarterly waste statistics. The latest quarterly return for October – December 2005 indicates a recycling/composting figure of 22.9%. The rolling figure for municipal waste recycled/composted from January – December 2005 is 22.8%

The figures indicate that there is significant progress being made towards the Scottish Minister's targets of 25% in 2006 on recycling and composting.  The overall results are available on our web site at www.sepa.org.uk/nws/data/returns.htm.

In addition, the Scottish Executive has today published proposals from local authorities on infrastructure to divert waste away from landfill.

Study tour to Denmark

Climate change is the greatest environmental threat facing us all, and in order to limit the impacts of methane produced by landfilling, we must move away from this method of disposing waste.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Scottish Executive have been actively seeking to promote awareness of more sustainable methods of waste management in Scotland.

Recently, key decision makers from local authorities and representatives from SEPA and the Scottish Executive saw at first hand a range of integrated waste management facilities operating in Denmark during a study tour.

A DVD, incorporating all of the facilities visited, as well as electronic versions of the presentations given, will be available on the SEPA website shortly.

Consultation on proposals to vary Scotoil authorisation

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is consulting on proposals to vary the existing authorisation, held under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993, regarding radioactive waste disposed of by Scotoil Services Ltd (Scotoil).

Proposals include reduced discharge limits and a requirement for Scotoil to implement a new discharge route

Recent monitoring of Aberdeen beach indicates that levels of radioactivity do not present a significant hazard to beach users and no link has been established between this and Scotoil's discharges.

The consultation document and Scotoil Services Ltd. draft authorisations can be accessed by clicking on the link below:  http://www.sepa.org.uk/consultation/current/scotoil.htm
