Pets' Kitchen | Newsletter - 31st January 07

Hello and welcome to silly cat week here at Pets' Kitchen!

As you can see, our Jill has decided that Poppy's seat makes a very comfortable cat chair and she spent the whole of yesterday curled up there!

Quite what makes cats tick is still a mystery to me, even after nearly 11 years of being a vet. If they're not sleeping in strange places, they're getting into boxes, stalking bits of paper or meowing at thin air just to scare you!

I wouldn't be surprised if behind those whiskers was a brain to rival ours - after all, they've got us twisted round their little toes haven't they? We feed them, house them and stroke them, and what do they do in return - scratch the furniture and bite our toes!

But we still love them - even if they do steal our daughters' seats!

Sainsbury's are now stocking
Joe & Jack's and Joe & Jill's
and what's more, they're on
special offer for a month!

  • Joe & Jack's 1kg down to 1.99
  • Joe & Jill's 350g a snip at 99p

Nearly all branches are stocking Joe & Jack's, and Joe & Jill's is available in the bigger stores.

You can also buy through Sainsbury's online shopping service (www.sainsburystoyou.com)

Joe's tips for silly cats
  • Give them any cardboard boxes you have spare - it'll keep them amused for days!
  • Don't be scared if your cat suddenly meows and jumps up in fright - she's having you on and there is no ghost!
  • Never tickle a growling cat
  • If you haven't seen your cat for a while, check the cupboards.
  • Expect the unexpected!

In our last newsletter, we asked you to put your comic thinking caps on and come up with a caption for this picture:

We had loads of entries had a great time trying to decide which was the best. In the end though, we all decided that there was one winner - and it came from Mrs Ellis:

'If you think I'm moving my Jacksie off this bed, you'd better think again!'

So congratualtions Mrs E and a month's supply of Joe & Jack's will be winging it's way to you very shortly!

Joe's recipe book - Birthday Cake!

What better way to celebrate the dog's big day than with a big, tasty cake? However you can't just bake a normal human cake – it'll be too rich and is likely to upset the dog's digestive tract – and that's the last thing you want on the dog's birthday! So here's a recipe for a healthy doggy birthday cake that will put a smile on the dog's face, and won't cause trouble!

To make a cake big enough for 3 or 4 dogs, you'll need:

  • 250g beef mince
  • 1 grated carrot
  • 75g Oatmeal
  • 75g flour
  • 30g butter
  • 3 eggs
  • Yoghurt
  • 2 rashers bacon

Fry the mince until brown, add in the grated carrot and continue to cook gently for a few minutes. Meanwhile, mix together the flour and oatmeal and rub in the butter. Beat in the eggs to form a sticky paste, and then add in the mince and carrot, complete with any juice from the pan. Mix the mixture together and press it into a well-greased cake tin. Cook for 30 minutes in a moderate oven and then turn out and allow to cool.

Grill the bacon until crisp and then cut up into small pieces. Cover the cake with yoghurt and sprinkle on the bacon pieces.

Where to buy...

Don't forget, you can order your Joe & Jack's and Joe & Jill's online, or pop into selected Waitrose or Sainsbury's stores.

That's all for now - we're all off to sit in the isles of our local Sainsbury's and admire the rows of Joe & Jack's and Joe & Jill's for a while!

It's a shame Jack can't go in so he could see his food sitting on the shelves - but to be honest, I'm not really sure he cares as long as there's a bowl-full waiting for him at the end of the day!

Please feel free to let us know how you get on buying your Joe & Jack's and Joe & Jill's at Sainsbury's - just drop us a line at info@petskitchen.co.uk
