| Dieny Itoe - 'Glasgow 1999 Design Medal' winner |
|
Over the last seven years, staff within the fashion section at Cardonald College have dedicated themselves to making the fashion related courses 'sector-leading'. They have not only established articulation routes to universities from around the UK, but have also spent time engaging with employers to ensure that the courses are relevant to the needs of industry. In 2007, our reputation was further enhanced when five former students, each proud of the start Cardonald gave them in the fashion world, won prestigious awards in the fashion industry. Three former students are now working with Scottish companies, through Scottish Textiles, on designs which are being shown in London and New York.
Outstanding, recent graduate, Dieny Itoe, was a HND Fashion Design student at the College in 2007 and scooped the prestigious 'Glasgow 1999 Design Medal' in November. The award was created as a lasting legacy of Glasgow 1999 - Year of Architecture and Design, and rewards both excellence and innovation in design. Dieny beat off competition from all Glasgow colleges and design schools - including Glasgow School of Art, Strathclyde University and Glasgow Caledonian design graduates.

| Students revamp the string vest for Christmas |
|
Fashion-savvy students from Cardonald College made a plea to save the string vest in December as supermarket giants Asda and Tesco announced that the undergarment would be withdrawn from sale.
Two teams of students took part in a challenge set by the BBC's Reporting Scotland to bring the string vest into the 21st century. The only catch was that they had fifteen minutes to turn the singlet into a sought-after fashion item!

| EU funded partnerships Fashion & Textiles |
|
The College was recently successful in winning two EU funding bids. Firstly, with the Izmir Vocational School, Izmir, Turkey, where the awards are effectively seed funding and will initiate the development of training in Fashion Technology and Fashion Design over a three year period. Further funding is expected from the Chamber of Commerce in Izmir to realise the full curriculum and staff development in the school. A Memorandum of Understanding between the Chamber of Commerce, the SQA and the British Council will aid this development.
The second bid, for partnerships in south-east Europe, sees the College partnering with the University of Pireus in Athens as well as other partners in Bulgaria, Wales and the University of Edinburgh to research and develop fashion products utilising 'smart fabrics.' This is an exciting area for the college, putting it firmly at the forefront of technology for the fashion industry.

| Cardonald leads on international 'Open Circle' Jewellery Exhibition |
|
Cardonald College's Jewellery section is globally-renowned for being at the forefront of innovative projects which challenge and inspire jewellery students. In 2007, Cardonald College was the lead partner in the 'Open Circle' project, which brought together four institutions from four countries. Our project partners are Gewerbliche Schule, Germany, Koulutuskeskus Salpaus, Finland and Istituto Pietro Selvatico, Italy.
The 'Open Circle' project, which was made possible by the EU Comenius Education Programme, brought together contemporary Silversmithing and Jewellery from the students and staff of the four European institutions. The idea behind the project was to produce pieces of jewellery which express the subtle national characteristics that co-exist with a common European identity. The project generated an impressive volume of work and exhibits of the work have taken place in all four countries.

| Journalism provision continues to grow |
|
Cardonald College continue to develop their range of journalism qualifications in conjunction with the industry-standard National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). Following yet another successful re-accreditation visit in the summer of 2007, the award-winning journalism course is to be bolstered by the launch of two new, specialist courses in 2008. Junior Reporters are to be helped towards their National Certificate Examination (NCE) with a bespoke refresher course aimed at preparing them for the exam which qualifies them to become senior reporters. And it's not just reporters who are being trained on the NCTJ course, with the first Sub-editing course to be launched in the spring of 2008. The new NCTJ Sub-editing exam is designed to train the headline-writers of tomorrow and Cardonald will offer training and the examination this year for the first time. Course co-ordinator Martin Boyle said: "We're delighted to be able to offer yet more NCTJ training for students and reporters across Scotland. NCTJ training is the gold standard for anyone wanting to make it in journalism and we're dedicated to continuing to offer the very best practical training at Cardonald." Meanwhile, media, communication and journalism staff are working towards organising the Write Stuff 2008 - the only competition exclusively for all of Scotland's university and college journalism students.

| Cardonald College students help film the BAFTA Scotland Awards |
|
November 2007 brought a fantastic opportunity for students on the 2nd year HND Television course to practice their skills, when they filmed the prestigious BAFTA Scotland Awards. The project, which saw our students prepare the show's footage, record the event, interview stars on the red carpet and edit of the full show for distribution to all BAFTA Scotland members, arose from a long term partnership between BAFTA Scotland, the BBC and the College. Dario Sinforiani, Programme Co-ordinator for the HND Television Course said: "We have a strong relationship with the BBC and Bafta Scotland and we also undertake television production for the 'Scottish Students on Screen Awards' in the Spring. These are fantastic opportunities for Cardonald College students to showcase their abilities.
Our students were bursting with enthusiasm for this television project. Working at the BAFTAs gave them the opportunity to deploy their skills at the Scottish film and TV industry's biggest night of the year. This was a fantastic chance to show what they could do in a live setting, in front of the most important people in the industry they aspire to be part of."
