Increase in Tribunal Award
Limits
The Employment Rights (Increase of Limits)
Order 2004 has been published announcing the increase in
tribunal award limits that will take place with effect from
1 February 2005. The main increases are:-

The week's pay for statutory purposes
(i.e. redundancy pay calculations) which is currently £270
will increase to £280 for all dismissals effective on or
after 1 February 2005;
-
The maximum compensatory award that can be
made by a tribunal in unfair dismissal cases will be
increased from £55,000 to £56,800. Sex Discrimination -

In the recent case of
Moonsar v Fiveways Express Transportation Ltd, the
Employment Appeal Tribunal held that it amounted to sex
discrimination where a female employee worked in close
proximity to male members of staff who regularly download
pornographic images onto their computers, and was fully
aware of what was going on.
On coming to their decision the EAT
overturned the Tribunal's decision that there was a defence,
and consequently no sex discrimination, because Mrs Moonsar
did not complain of the behaviour at the time ... [click here to read

New ACAS
Publications
ACAS has had another busy month publishing more of its
free online Electronic Learning (E-learning) packages and a
new booklet on Stress at Work. These very practical and
user-friendly resources aim to help businesses and
organisations manage employment issues and problems in the
workplace.
Following the success of its first e-learning guide on
the new Statutory Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures ACAS
has now produced further packages covering:

Written Statements of employment
- Managing Redundancies
The Stress at Work booklet is designed to be a good
practice guide and uses worked examples to good effect.
