Email your question

Welcome to the September issue of ClickThrough. This month we look at the top 5 things to avoid when creating emails. You'll also have your chance to "tell us what you think".

We're always available to help get the most from NewZapp. If you want expert advice simply email marketing@newzapp.co.uk and we'll get straight back to you.

Top 5 things to avoid when creating emails

  1. Trigger Words. Email filters use a variety of filtering processes to try and eliminate junk email. One of the main filter processes is content filtering. Here the email filter will look for trigger words which occur in most junk email. Using an email checker can reduce the chance of your email being blocked. The email checker will highlight the trigger words in your copy. You can then try to replace these with other similar words.

  2. Cutting and Pasting from Word. When you cut from a Word document you copy the text and all of the hidden font tags. This can result in your email rendering incorrectly when it is delivered. Even though it may appear to be fine in your NewZapp account. This is easily avoided. Simply cut from Word, paste your copy into a NotePad document and then cut from NotePad and paste into your NewZapp template.

  3. Underlining text. Don't forget that links will be underlined. If you underline text in your email you run the risk of confusing the reader. It also ends up looking like a link that doesn't work (just like this). If you need to emphasise something in your email use font size and colour or use an image.

  4. Large images. Large images can take a long time to download. Don't forget that some of your recipients may still be on dial up or slow Internet connections. Try to keep your images as light as possible. This will decrease the download time and improve the readers experience.

  5. Shouting. Shouting is when you type something in upper case. This will score points on an email filter, it's also considered to be bad etiquette.

    "highlight calls to action"

Font sizes are a better way to emphasise a point and draw attention. You can also use quotes like we have above to highlight calls to action.
